Mini Onion Samosa

Mini Onion Samosa is a quick and delicious night snack with spicy caramelized onions and a crispy exterior made from spring roll.



"Mini Onion Samosa", one of my favorite night snacks, is perfect beside a cup of hot chai. Perfectly seasoned and delicious onions in a crispy fried outer layer. The true pleasure that can be made in a short time.

It's been more than 2 weeks since I posted my last recipe. Since starting this blog, this is the first time there has been a huge gap. And that of course was not intentional. That happened a few weeks ago. I excitedly fried my favorite bonda as an evening snack. I intend to post it on the blog too. However, as was destined for that day, the bonda shot hot oil at me. Thank God, the impact is minimal. After several days of rest to calm my nerves and a quick trip to Washington State to re-energize myself, I am now returning violently.

When I was growing up, a night snack with hot chai was my favorite food of the day. Even though it's technically not food, I will gladly skip dinner after eating some of my favorite snacks like paneer puff or samosas. My father knew this fact very well, he often spoiled me with this snack. Among such snacks, samosa onions are one of my favorites. Unlike vegetable samosas that have a thicker outer layer, I like the thinner and sharper outside of samosas. Also when samosas are fried, the onions are caramelized well under heat and give a naturally sweet taste. Something that I really love.

The effort to enter a recipe is clearly not worth the taste of the dish. That is true in most cases because I almost always make dishes that are very easy to make at home, but very delicious. This onion samosa recipe is included in this category. Samosas are traditionally made with a mixture made from multipurpose flour. And that's how I made it when I posted the Veg Samosa recipe.

However, now I want to take advantage of tried and tested shortcuts that will make life easier. These mini onion samosas use store-bought spring roll sheets instead of preparing their own dough at home. The end result is onion samosas that are just as delicious, with an exterior that is even fresher and only takes a fraction of the time compared to regular samosas 🙂

INGREDIENTS

  • Spring roll sheet - 8 large

To fill

  • Oil - 2 tsp + for frying
  • Onion - 2 large (thinly sliced)
  • Salt - 1/4 tsp (adjust per taste)
  • Turmeric powder - 1/8 teaspoon
  • Red Chili Powder - 1/2 tsp (adjust per taste)
  • Coriander - 1/4 tsp
  • Jeera powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander leaves - 2 tablespoons (finely chopped)
  • Poha | Aval | Rice Flakes - 1/4 Cup (coarsely ground)

For paste

  • All-purpose flour - as needed
  • Water - as needed


INSTRUCTIONS

  1. First, remove the spring roll sheet from the freezer and allow it to melt. Place it in a damp cloth, so the sheets don't dry.
  2. Then, heat the oil in a large skillet and add onions, salt. Saute until the onions wilt a little.
  3. Now, add all the masala powder (turmeric, red chili, coriander, jeera) and mix well. Saute for another minute and turn off the heat.
  4. Add the chopped coriander leaves and coarsely ground poha to the onion mixture. Stir until evenly mixed. Let the mixture cool and come to room temperature.
  5. Heat oil in a paw for frying. Also, mix the all-purpose flour with enough water to make a thick paste. Now, cut the spring roll into a rectangle of about 1.5 inches. My spring roll sheet is big enough to give 4 smaller sheets.
  6. Now, take a small portion of the filling, place it on a rectangular sheet and fold it in the form of a triangle. Use multipurpose flour to cover loose edges.
  7. After the oil is hot, fry the samosas in batches until they turn golden. Drain the remaining oil in a paper napkin.
  8. Enjoy the heat.
